Piedad Yorba Sowl was, in the words of culinary historian Charles Perry (a contributor to our book), “Los Angeles’s first female celebrity chef and proprietress of the nation’s first upscale Mexican restaurant.” She opened the Casa Verdugo in 1905 as a destination “Old California” theme restaurant in the Glendale foothills that was purposefully built along the Pacific Electric Railroad line to attract tourists and locals alike.
